One
of our favourite trips involves driving along the N124 to S Bartholemeo
de Messines, a typical inland market town, then follow the signs to Silves,
through orange orchards, until turning off at a sign for the which is
a wonderful lake/reservoir with a huge dam. Along the road there are normally
farmers selling oranges and honey The scenery is amazing and lots of water
sports are available on an island in the summer so long as there is enough
water in the resevoir. The Dam is typical of those built all over Portugal
in Salazar's time. The monument (all the dams have one) is usually defaced
to obliterate Salazar's name! There is also a very good open air restaurant
at the top of the track which serves everything from coffee and ice creams
through beer and snacks to some superb local specialties which are worth
missing breakfast for!
This area has been badly hit by the devastating forest
fires in August and September 2003 so may not be too scenic for some time.
an update will follow when we have been able to visit at Christmas.
